Planetarium Technician

Specifications are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.DEFINITIONTo coordinate operational aspects of the Clever Planetarium including operating slide, sound equipment and other special multi-media effects; to conduct planetarium shows and tape narrators; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives direction from the Director.ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTSEssential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Operate a variety of audio-visual and multi-media equipment including film projectors, slide projectors, audio cassette players and computerized controls in the operation of the Clever Planetarium; resolve technical difficulties.

2. Write, edit and modify scripts and content for planetarium shows and presentations; ensure that shows are interesting, informative and accurate.

3. Produce original slides, slides from copy work and duplicate slides for use in presentations.

4. Provide technical and creative assistance to instructors in the use of special planetarium equipment and production techniques.

5. Research new technology and products used in planetarium shows; stay abreast of astronomical developments; recommend the purchase of new equipment.

6. Work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.

7. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:
  • Basic principles, practices and terminology of astronomy
  • Services and operations of a modern planetarium.
  • Operational characteristics of a variety of audio-visual equipment.
  • English usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Methods and techniques of creating and duplicating slides.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations

Ability to:
  • Coordinate operational activities for the planetarium.
  • Give presentations at the planetarium.
  • Operate a variety of audio-visual equipment.
  • Prepare and edit scripts for planetarium shows.
  • Respond to questions and inquiries from students and staff.
  • Work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
Two years of technical/audio-visual experience or experience working in a planetarium.

Training:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in astronomy or a related field.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions:
Planetarium environment; work on ladders and scaffolds; work with machinery; exposure to electrical energy.

Physical Conditions:
Essential and other important duties may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
